The Day of AI Australia program can be taught at any time during 2026.
Our core program, the AI Literacy Foundations series covers the basics of AI with varying numbers of lessons, depending on year level.
For Years 5-6 and Years 7-10 our Student Challenge is back!
Each year level program also includes additional lessons, which build on the foundations and explore specific topics in depth. For more information see the FAQs below or access the Educator Guide through the learning management system (LMS).

Day of AI is a FREE immersive, interactive and engaging daylong artificial intelligence (AI) literacy program for students in Kindergarten through to Year 12. Day of AI brings AI technology to life in the classroom, exploring the opportunities and implications of an AI-powered world.
Day of AI has been developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) RAISE Lab, and tailored to the Australian context in partnership with UNSW and our education partners, to introduce school students to the knowledge and skills they need to thrive in a world that will be powered by AI.
The program includes the most up-to-date information and contemporary examples of AI technologies and their applications. Lessons showcase Australian scientists and case studies, bringing to life how AI is impacting society.
Core lessons are available for each year-level program. This is the AI Literacy Foundations series. The number of lessons in this series varies depending on the year level.
Teachers can deliver lessons in one day, across a week, or spread over a term!
Additional lessons (our Beyond AI Literacy series), build on the foundations and explore specific topics in depth. We strongly recommend that teachers have delivered the Foundations series before delivering any of the Beyond series.
Topics cover everything from the foundations of AI, Large Language Models, chatbots, ethical considerations of AI, through to how AI is impacting industries and what this means for the future of Australian jobs.
The Day of AI materials are free for all Australian schools and involve a series of creative, fun and hands-on activities.
You can teach the program at any point in the 2026 school year.
We know that every school is different – that’s why Day of AI is flexible and can be delivered by schools across multiple days, across a whole week or even spread across the whole term or school year. The program is flexible and adaptable.
Topics cover everything from the foundations of AI, Large Language Models, chatbots, ethical considerations of AI, through to how AI is impacting industries and what this means for the future of Australian jobs.
Day of AI curriculum aims to ensure that, across the lessons and challenge, students develop an understanding of what AI is, and enables exploration and interaction with AI systems in a way that is safe and responsible.
Day of AI is open to all schools in every state and territory across Australia.
The program is free. Teachers simply need to register to access the materials.
Day of AI is open to all students from Kindergarten to Year 12.
Teachers can register to participate in Day of AI any time throughout the 2026 school year.
Program materials will also be available during school holidays for educators wanting to deliver lessons as part of school holiday programs.
Materials are available to teachers, principals, educators and school staff from March 2026 – access the materials through our Learning Management System.
If you are a tutor or someone who will be delivering the lessons to students, please register as an educator, selecting “other” from the school drop down list.
Day of AI materials are also available to people who are not teachers, principals, educators or school staff.
Day of AI is free for all Australian schools to participate in.
Materials will be made available to other children’s educators in March 2026 – access the materials through our Learning Management System. Please register as an Educator (other). In the section where you are required to put in a school, please select Other.

For the interactive activities, students will need a device to participate – that can be a Chromebook, laptop, tablet or desktop PC with a webcam. We recommend one device per 2 students. Please note that one of the AI tools (Teachable Machines) is not available on iPads.

Day of AI is an introduction to AI for students, so no prior experience is necessary. The activities are also designed to suit students of all ability levels.
We encourage as many students as possible from participating schools and year levels to take part in the activities, but not every student is required to. We understand that schools are a busy environment, so it’s up to individual schools to determine how many students are involved.
We encourage schools to complete all the activities to ensure they get the most out of the day, but it is OK if you are unable to complete them all.
You may choose to deliver only the core AI Literacy Foundations program (or even just a selection of those lessons).
The AI Literacy Foundations lessons are a prerequisite before moving onto the Beyond AI Literacy series.
The activities can be easily delivered by any teacher, regardless of specialisation. No experience in computer science, AI or any other digital technologies is required.
Teachers can access our short information videos or join an information session to go through the program content and activities and ensure they feel confident delivering them. Information about teacher support is available in the LMS once teachers are registered for the program.
